If you've been to an Afrikaans high school, chances are that you've come across a book authored by Dalene Matthee - one of South Africa's most well-known writers. Fiela se Kind, Kringe in 'n Bos and Toorbos are just some of the books in which she tells stories of reclaiming stolen identities, resisting the established order and the close relationship between humans and nature.
The latest cinematic adaptation of her work graces theatres on 13 November. In Toorbos, a young girl entering womanhood has to choose between her devotion to the forest and her love for a man narrow-mindedly focused on the fruits of progress.
