The former mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Mongameli Bobani, who was both loved and loathed during his 17-year term as UDM councillor in the municipality, died in St George's Hospital in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday afternoon. He was 52. 

Bobani, who served as the Mayoral Committee Member for Infrastructure and Engineering at the time of his death, was diagnosed with Covid-19 three weeks ago.
