A mere eight days before the deadline set by the Constitutional Court for the Electoral Amendment Bill's enactment, Parliament has yet again decided to apply to the apex court for an extension of this deadline.
When the Constitutional Court ruled in June 2020 that the electoral legislation should be amended to allow independent candidates to compete for election to the National Assembly and provincial legislatures, it was hailed by many as the start of a new era in South African politics.
Its journey from a beacon of hope to an actual law of the land, however, has been arduous.
