SA Rugby Union (Saru) CEO Jurie Roux - who now officially finds himself on the wrong side of an accounting scandal - has been ordered to pay Stellenbosch University the R37 million he shifted improperly from its cash reserves to its rugby club.
Roux has been engaged in a pitched legal battle with the university over payments made during his tenure as a director in the institution's finance department between 2002 and 2010.
On the strength of findings of a forensic probe initiated by the university in 2012, Roux was accused of using back-end access to the banking system to channel payments - which had neither been authorised nor budgeted for - to the Maties Rugby Club, where he held the position of treasurer and later chairperson.
