Hospitals in the Cape metro are under significant pressure, prompting provincial health authorities to issue a circular outlining new standard procedure for the treatment of Covid-19 patients - including who can be admitted to ICU beds.

Covid-19 wards across the province were at 92% capacity by the middle of the past week, while total hospital capacity was at 89% (6 717 patients to 7 537 beds) of which 33% (more than 2 200) were Covid-19 patients, according to the Western Cape Department of Health.
