Cricket, the changing game

WITH the advent of night cricket Tests, pink balls and results in three days, cricket has changed somewhat in the past 150 years since it became an international sport.

Statistically, South Africa’s Hashim Amla has the dubious distinction of scoring a double ton in India, and then captaining a losing team for the first time there, thus ending a nine-year streak of external wins.

Blaming it on the pitches of the sub-continent may be a raison d’etre, but this is a side that just achieved a phenomenal first - twin series wins in both shorter formats.

India may face censure by the ICC for preparing demon pitches, but then again, this is a country that has altered the playing fields of cricket, first with the IPL, then virtually controlling the ICC, with offices moved from cricket’s ancestral home, London, to Dubai.
