The four branches of the Old Apostolic Churches in Gugulethu held their first ever internal choral competition and the whole event sent sparks flying, figuratively speaking.
On Monday 25 September, choirs from the North, East, West and South branches in Gugulethu competed amongst themselves, with each performing a single vernacular and English songs in the different categories.
The big winners on the night were the Gugulethu South choir, which walked away with an award, scooping the Young Adult and the Youth category.
The youth categories constitute of members between the ages of 16 to 25 and the Young Adult category, members from the ages of 26 to 35-years old.
The event also included an exhibition by the young choirs of the various branches. This event was in initiated by recently launched NGO called Music and Arts, which was founded by Siyabulela Mka, its chairman and member of the Old Apostolic Church.
Mka said the aim of his organisation is to train and empower youngsters in the arts.
“We are not only looking at just youngsters from the church but from the whole community. The church belongs in the community and we are also hoping to make this an annual even that would reach beyond the borders of Gugulethu,” he said.
He said that for the competition, they invited choristers, musicians and music students to judge the choirs.
“We are currently putting together resources to focus on education. We are still struggling with resources because we don’t just want choristers but we want to teach them about music performance and playing instruments,” he said.
