Members of the African National Congress (ANC) in Dullah Omar region have condemned the shooting of ward 36 councillor Nokuthula Bolitye.
Bolitye, who took over from the controversial late councillor Elese Depouch almost four years ago, was shot and injured in Crossroads on Thursday 14 May. She was with her 13-year-old son at the veranda of their home. The motive for the shooting is unknown.
Nyanga police spokesperson Capt Nomboxolo Sitshitshi confirmed the incident. “The victims and a few other people were sitting under the veranda in front of the house when an unknown man wearing a black jacket passed the yard. He suddenly returned and fired shots at the victims through a safety gate. Two people were injured and rushed to hospital,” said Sitshitshi.
She urged anyone with information to come forward.
In a statement, regional secretary JJ Tyhalisisu described the incident as a criminal attack on the councillor and her family.
“We call on law enforcement to find these attempting assassins and bring them to book. We also call on community members who might have information regarding this incident or any information that might assist in apprehending the criminals to contact the police,” said Tyhalisisu.
He wished Bolitye and her son a speedy recovery.
