Detective work applauded by top police brass

The sterling and dedicated investigative work of two police officers stationed at Lwandle Police Station has reaped rewards, after the persecution of four men for various crimes committed in separate incidents.

Detective constables Wynand Carelse and Mfundo Soyiyo have been praised for their hard work and commitment in bringing criminals to book for crimes committed between November 2017 and February last year.

Sonwabile Hlukanisa (24) will now spend time behind bars after being found guilty of murder, while a 16-year-old will do two years in jail for culpable homicide, Malizole Ntsunguzi (30) has been convicted of attempted murder and Andanele Solontsi (18) of robbery.

Lwandle Police Station commander Lieutenant Colonel Xolani Williams and head of the detective branch Captain Stella Madzidzela congratulated both investigating officers for their hard work in ensuring the successful prosecution of the four men.

The details of the cases are as follows:

. The 16-year-old boy from Lwandle was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for culpable homicide in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on 24 October last year. The fatal stabbing took place at Nomzamo Recreational Community Park at 19:30 on 11 February last year.

After the deceased’s body was found at the park, Lwandle police opened a murder case. Following investigations by Soyiyo, the boy was arrested and appeared in court. After a number of appearances, the charge was changed to culpable homicide and he was sentenced to two years.

. In the murder case involving Hlukanisa, he was handed a sentence of 12 years in prison on 21 November last year. The incident had taken place in Skoji Street, Asanda Village on 7 December 2017, when an argument broke out between the victim and Hlukanisa.

The conflict escalated into a physical fight, which saw Hlukanisa draw a knife and stab the victim in the neck. He collapsed and died at the scene, and a murder case was opened.

Soyiyo managed to arrest Hlukanisa shortly after the incident. Following several court appearances he was sentenced to 12 years behind bars.

. Ntsunguzi, from Lwandle, will spend 13 years behind bars after he was found guilty of the attempted murder of his former girlfriend.

The victim was at her then-boyfriend’s home in Pholile informal settlement when she heard a knock at the door at 20:45 on 9 January last year. She opened up to find Ntsunguzi on her doorstep.

As she walked to the bedroom to find something to wear, she was shot and wounded in the neck. After she collapsed, Ntsunguzi picked her up and took her to a neighbouring house demanding she didn’t tell anyone what he had done.

An attempted murder case was opened, and Ntsunguzi was arrested shortly after. He was sentenced to 13 years in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on 23 November.

. Lwandle resident Solontsi was found guilty of robbery for an incident on the corner of Hlathi Drive, Asanda Village on 10 November 2017.

The victim and two friends were sitting on the corner at 11:11 when Solontsi (18) tried to get their attention by calling them. Ignoring his calls he approached them, produced a knife, threatened and searched them, and made off with the victim’s cellphone.

A case of robbery was investigated by Carelse, who managed to track down and arrested Solontsi, who made several court appearances until his sentencing to nine years in prison on 6 December last year.
