While most people might take getting into a hot shower for granted, for a Khayelitsha resident, getting under the shower for the first time, was the experience of a life time.
This was the case for Malungisa Tafeni,63, from Site B.
On Thursday last week, he took a shower, thanks to a Unilever- a giant soap producer- hygiene initiative.
The company took health awareness to another level by treating more than 300 Khayelitsha residents to a hot shower.
Using one of its popular brands, Lifebuoy, the company set up eight mobile showers at the local Andile Msizi Hall, where residents took turns to shower.
They were also educated about the importance of properly washing their hands.
In the end, all the participants were given a bar soap and a towel.
An ecstatic Tafeni said this was the first time he took a shower ever, and was happy to have participated in the programme.
He stressed the importance of hygiene in the community. Tafeni also said he hoped that people have learnt important lessons from the programme.
Julia Benya,36, said she understood the importance of hygiene education, especially in the townships.
“What lifebuoy brought here today was a great idea, not only because they provided us with warm showers, but educating our people on the importance of keeping clean,” she said.
Spelele Mjadu, from Unilever, said: “During the drought, it became clear that, in a water scarce environment, personal hygiene is easily neglected and disease-causing germs can spread all too quickly, particularly in densely populated areas such as Khayelitsha,”
Mjadu stressed the need to wash hands with soap for protection against germs. “This is why we felt it pertinent to bring hygiene education to this community.”
