Two Khayelitsha men have been arrested after they were nabbed with R6 million worth of abalone on Monday.

According to SAPS the discovery was made in Site B after the provincial tracing team spotted suspicious activity while they were looking for other suspects.

“The officers, whilst busy tracing suspects, noticed smoke coming out of a house in Kume Street. The police went to investigate at the premises and announced themselves at the door. When no one responded or opened the door, the members became suspicious and entered the house to investigate,” said spokesperson Constable Zak Marais.

Police then searched the house were they discovered thirty-nine 39 pallets with dry abalone.

“Further investigation led to an additional sixteen 16 boxes of abalone being discovered. The total amount of abalone found is estimated to have a street value of R6 million,” said Marais.

The two men, aged 34 and 36, were arrested for possession of abalone and are set to appear in court.
