No substance to child snatching rumour

Police have poured cold water on rampant rumours of child snatching that have surfaced on social media.

On Tuesday night agitated residents in Mfuleni cornered a car driven by a white woman, accusing her of “stealing children”.

The frightened woman was “roughed up” by the crowd who also damaged a police vehicles in the process.

Mfuleni police spokesperson Captain Nomathemba Muavha said upon investigation, police could not find any substance to the claims.

“ We are aware of numerous allegations regarding child kidnappings in this province being posted on social media platforms, which are refuted as it cannot be substantiated with any police records,” Muavha said.

She further urged people to stop spreading this hoax message.

Muavha said they strongly encourage children to be frequently sensitised of crime and dangerous situations in a responsible manner and at all times.
