Zintle Xiniwe has vowed to defend the Gugulethu 10 km race title she won last year.

Now running under the colours of Nedbank Athletics Club, the petite Xiniwe, vowed to better her 35 minute winning time.

“It will be important that I win this one because it’s the 15th year of the race and I want to be part of history,” she said.

Gugulethu Athletics Club chairman Thobile Ndzube echoed Xiniwe’s sentiments about the race’s historical value.

“This is the 15th year running of this iconic race and this promises to be even bigger and better than before,” he said.

He said the race will be run on a new, more exciting and flat route within the streets of Gugulethu.

“It touches the following areas, Gugulethu Seven and Amy Biehl commemoration sites, runs pass Mzoli’s house and hits towards the end Kwakhikhi and finishes at NY49 Stadium,” he said.

The 10km race starts at 7am followed by the 4.2km at 7;30am.

He urged participants to be early for registration.

“This year we introducing race numbers so that we know who has entered.

“At the end of the race all participants receive a special 15 year celebration medal,” he said,

There will be a lucky draw with loads of prizes after the event.

After the race there will be a music concert at the same venue. Tickets for the concert are available at computickets for R70 (general) and R120 (VIP ).

Ndzube urged families to come in numbers to support this event.

“Come and experience this fun filled day with us,” he enthused.
