The South African Post Office (Sapo) says it has paid more than R5m in Sassa grants and has seen more than 6.5 million beneficiaries convert to the new Sassa card.
With the current CPS contract expiring on Sunday, Sapo says in a statement it is “confident of a smooth takeover” of the social grant payouts.
In the statement, Sapo says they paid 97% of the 5.4 million social grant recipients who use the new gold Sassa card.
Payments are still ongoing at Sassa cash pay-points in line with the payment schedules.
Sapo says 76% of the August grant payments were finalised by Friday 7 September, the third since the state-led agreement with Sassa was concluded in December last year.
Lindiwe Kwele, Sapo COO responsible for grant payments, says: “The partnership between Sapo and Sassa benefits millions of social grant beneficiaries, as they are now freed from practices such as unwanted deductions.”
The data for the August pay run show beneficiaries did 6.5 million ATM transactions and 4.4 million transactions at merchants.
“The almost equal split between ATM and POS transactions, coupled with the in-branch transaction volumes, shows that grant recipients are using all the available channels.
“This behaviour [occurred] earlier than expected,” says Kwele.
The Post Office was in its final week of cash payments on 20 September, with just over 300 000 social grants recipients at 1213 payment points.
These are in areas that do not have a post office within reach, or any national payment infrastructure points, according to the statement.
