A state-of-the-art music school was officially launched in Langa last week to give young and aspiring musicians a chance to succeed.
Bridges for Music Academy, which has been under construction for the last few months, will give young artists an opportunity to learn the craft without leaving their community.
The multi-million Rand facility has been built at the old Tsoga centre, and will give the students an opportunity to learn from some of the industry’s leading figures.
On offer in this facility is a recording studio, a computer lab, lecture hall and sitting places for students and visitors.
Operations manager of the academy Thulani Headman said before the academy they used to run workshops where they would invite well-known musicians to come and inspire the young artists. He said, however, the musicians would come with expensive equipment and leave with it again, leaving nothing for their students.
“We decided to start Bridges for Music so that the young artists can get a chance to learn more about the industry,” he said.
He said the academy is about uplifting talent and enriching artists with knowledge.
Headman said they teach music, entrepreneurship and life skills. He said they offer a free five-month course. They opened their doors in August to 17 students and they hope to increase the figures next year. “We want to expand next year and have 80 creatives for the year,” he said.
A DJ, producer and rapper who attended the course, Siphe Fassie, from Langa described the experience as mind-blowing. He said he got to listen to some of the big names in the music industry.
Fassie said he learned music production, entrepreneurship and life skills which will help shape his music career.
Noxolo Kwana, a singer and songwriter from Khayelitsha, said what attracted her to the academy was their focus on the mental well-being of students. “I suffered from depression and had to drop out of school but coming here has helped me heal because I got the necessary support I needed,” she said.
