Whilst the #feesmustfall movement took the country by storm last year, for others, it has opened up their creative streak.
Ayabonga “King Kush” Maqhude and Tebogo “VonTebz” Motlagodo the brains behind an eponymous song dedicated to the movement.
The duo did not even know each other before the movement as Ayabonga is from thee Eastern Cape, and Tebogo is from the Northwest.
But the love of music and student struggles brought them together.
Now they have recorded a song titled #systemmustfall at a studio in Masiphumelele in Fishhoek.
Their surroundings and experience was what gave birth to their creative lyrics, they say.
According to the duo, the song was inspired by the current situation in the country, including free education, out-sourcing, and voting.
Ayabonga,22, gave a detailed explanation of what the song was about.
“The song is about a fight for the students who were fighting for fees must fall so we did the song to support the movement” he said.
On the other side Tebogo also explained what life was like when he was still a student.
“I remember the time I ate noodles at lunch and most of the time and how I always would ask people that were living close to my shack for transport fee to get to the campus” he added.
Listening to the song, one might argue that there’s already a similar song for this particular movement that already has been launched by a former Wits University student and fees must fall campaigner and now rapper “GiGi Lamagne” titled Fees Must Fall.
Ayabonga further explains what makes their song unique and acknowledged the comparison to the two songs.
“What makes our songs different is that we do not focus on fees must fall only, we are looking on the broader issues of the government system; which makes our song unique” he said.
The future of the two looks brighter and the song will have an immediate effect on the audience particularly the students and hopefully, it won’t burst their eardrums.
