The annual Easter soccer tournament was held at the Lwandle Sports Complex at the weekend.
This year’s tournament saw less teams participating compared to last year, and featured a tournament for the under-18s which was won by Manchester United.
The senior teams’ final was contested by defending champions Two For Joy and All Stars.
Two for Joy went into the final as favourites to lift the cup, but it was not an easy pass.
They were the first to draw blood through a splendid free-kick, but All Stars cancelled that out and went on to take the lead.
With only 20 minutes left of the game, Two For Joy brought in their deadly striker, known as Kiki who troubled the defenders.
All Stars were reduced to 10 men after their defender committed a second bookable offence and the referee gave him his marching orders.
Kiki continued to trouble the All Stars’ defence and he finally scored his first goal of the match. Five minutes before the end of the game, the striker doubled his tally and that was the end for All Stars.
Sihle Kwayini thanked the organisers of the tournament and said support for all soccer teams is always welcomed.
“There are 36 teams registered with our local football association (LFA), each team with over 30 players. When people support soccer, they take many children, who would be on the streets doing things we don’t like, and get them to play soccer,” he said.
“We thank the local wardcouncillors for making this tournament a reality.” he said.
Thembalethu Ngxovu, deputy chairperson of the Heldrberg LFA, said the tournament was not at the standard they expected it to be.
“There are some disappointments but, as the LFA, we are pleased that all under-18 teams played because that is the future of our local football,” he explained.
“The senior teams played well, but our main focus was the development of the younger boys.”
Both local ward councillors who contributed to the tournament were not present for the duration of the tournament.
