Nyanga police have warned residents to be on the lookout for a white Toyota Avanza which has been involved in a string of violent crimes in the community.

This vehicle is allegedly being used by suspects to commit house robberies in Ekuphumleni and Vuk’uzenzele areas in Nyanga.

“The three unknown suspects, with two possibly armed, were driving a white Avanza without registration plates. The suspects are targeting houses during the day and in one case they pretended to be looking for someone or a place to rent,” said Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said that once the suspects were inside(the house), they would begin robbing the occupants.

In a different incident a woman who was coming from a church service on Sunday 22 January was kidnapped and raped by another white Toyota Avanza.

“The woman boarded the taxi at about 08:30 AM in Philippi. The vehicle had tinted windows. Inside the Avanza there was a driver and another man and as soon as the woman entered the vehicle, the men demanded her handbag and pin numbers,” said Sitshitshi.

She said that the driver drove into the bushes and both men repeatedly raped the woman.

“The two men even tried to put a tyre around the victim’s neck attempting to set her alight but she pleaded with them not to.

The suspects later gave the victim a taxi fare to go home. She went to a nearest house and called the police,” Sitshitshi added that the police are investigating the matter.

“We would like to advise passengers to always check for the big numbers displayed on taxis because it might be easy to remember than the registration number.

Rather stop taxis where one would be able to see from far who and how many people are inside the taxi. Also leave for destinations while it is still early,” she advised.

Anyone with information is urged to call SAPS Nyanga at 021 380 3320, 021 380 3380 OR Crime Stop at 0860010111.
