A PRE-primary school pupil from Magwaveni was struck by a truck and killed instantly near Maidstone, Tongaat on the R102 on Monday afternoon.
The incident has the community questioning the dangerous route children need to travel to school.
The pupil, Andile Sanele Khayile was on his way home with other pupils when the accident occurred.
According Netcare 911’s Chris Botha, reports from the scene indicate that Andile was hit by a truck and then dragged on the road for some distance.
“Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the unresponsive body of the child lying on the road. Tragically, the boy died before our arrival due to the extensive injuries that he sustained,” said Botha.
Andile’s sister, Slungi Mthembu said the family is heartbroken.
“We are so sad because he was walking home and the truck hit him. We don’t know what happened,” said Mthembu.
She said their brother was with Andile at the time of the accident and he is now traumatised.
Mthembu complained about being forced to send Andile to Hambanathi for his schooling.
