‘Do not cross railway lines’ - Metrorail KZN

A NOTICE has been sent out warning people to refrain from crossing railway lines in Tongaat.
This is after a 42-year-old woman was knocked over by a train in Fairbreeze on Monday night.

Acting HOD Marketing and Communications manager for Metrorail KZN, Isabel Westhuizen told the Weekly: “Metrorail regulary conducts awareness campaigns to remind the public that it is not only dangerous to cross railway lines but also illegal. The risk increases after sunset and thus creates further complications. These incidents have a profound effect on the well-being of our train drivers as they experience these traumatic incidents on a daily bases.
“Metrorail often has a large contingency of drivers unavailable for duty while employee assistance programmes are carried out. In some cases some of these drivers never return to duty. Metrorail pleads with the public not to cross railway lines as it is dangerous.”

Westhuizen confirmed that Metrorail received a report about a woman who was knocked by a train in Tongaat. “One of our train drivers reported that he could possibly have struck a person on July 3 at around 8.30pm. A Metrorail security contingency was dispatched to investigate, with negative effects. On the morning of July 4 around 8.30am, a report was received of a body lying next to the tracks between Fraser and Tongaat station. The matter is under investigation by our own security team as well as the Railway Police." Tongaat police spokesperson Captain Patrick Ngwane said an inquest docket has been opened.
