CHILDHOOD friends Levan Naicker and Valen Govender are using social media to help people in need of immediate aid with the assistance of the community through a project called Leave Your Mark.
The project currently uses Facebook to alert the community of aid that’s needed with the aim of providing assistance immediately.
The aid differs from groceries, napkins, baby formula and any necessities to ensure people are given the help they need as soon as possible.
Govender explained it works by identifying a family or being informed of a family or person who needs help and informing the community of their plight through Leave Your Mark.
“The main concept is if you are in need of urgent help we will try and assist but the idea is that this is aid we are trying to provide immediately for a period of time,” said Govender.
“We are mostly like the facilitators in the project and help identify people who need help.”
Govender said part of the idea was to help people who want to get involved in charity work or in assisting people with aid to get in touch with those that need the help.
“We live in a great community that is Verulam and a lot of people want to help others but they don’t know how or who really needs it,” said Govender.
So far the project has assisted dozens of families since it was started in 2014 and this year the duo is hoping to work towards creating a mobile soup kitchen in the community.
Naicker said it’s all part of their long term goals of helping uplift the community by also bringing skills to the homeless and unemployed and eventually they hope to have a centre where people can hold feeding schemes and projects to up-skill others.
“We don’t want to create a situation of dependency and what we hope to do is provide people who are in need with temporary assistance with help while trying to find ways for them to have a permanent solution to their problem,” said Naicker.
The friends have been involved in various community outreach programmes from a young age and for several years they have wanted to start something with the aim of connecting people to help positively change the community.
Govender, a marketing manager and Naicker, who is involved in his father’s business, said the idea came from seeing the growing need for help in the community.
They also felt they wanted to help make other organisations and events a success so they created Leave Your Mark to also help promote the community uplifting programmes being done by others.
