VAC gears up for inaugural challenge

THE VAC weekend doubles continued with membership taking in the Saturday’s time trials followed by the Sundays Airport run comprising of 5km, 10km, 12km and 15km.

VAC leading duo Krish Naidoo and Velvan Nair led team VAC in the 15km run in 1:26 followed closely by grandmaster Jayce Moodley a minute later.

Leading VAC middle distance runners Shirley Narainsamy and Dolly Shamlall posted 2:00 hour finishes, with Raeesa Bayat and Tharushka Sookoo following through the Airport challenge in 2:32.

Simon Blose has begun his preseason training for the forthcoming Comrades ultra, putting in a strong run with a 1:25 finish ahead of Sarah Naidoo, fresh from her long layoff.

Making a return after a prolonged absence was Shavir Karanjoo in 1:35 ahead of walker Smiley Naidoo.

Pam Zwane eased through in 1:43, with Hemraj Shamlall slowly regaining from in 1:48. Changing disciplines from running to walking, Beena Maharaj has continued to show top form with a 1:48 finish ahead of Anand Naicker, Saga and Priyen Govender in 2:21 Vukani Maphumulo led team VAC in his customary speed run in 48 minutes ahead of leading VAC middle distance female runner Joyce Ngidi in 59 minutes, clearly elated with her sub one-hour finish. KZN provincial athlete Nana Sigubudu eased through in 1:05 with Cynthia Zondi following through in 1:35. Dolly Moodley and Ronnie Rangasamy completed the 10km finishers with a keen eye on next week’s challenge. Verulam Athletic Club introduced its inaugural VAC Airport League Challenge commencing this week with a once a month 10km, 15km and 21.1km challenge as part of the Airport challenge on selected Sundays each month. Saturday and Sunday runs commence at 5am, and are free.
