THE Verulam Athletic Club (VAC) begin their 2016 season with time trials and development this weekend with early starts at 5am on Saturday and Sunday.
VAC have invited runners and walkers alike for the Saturday time trial with 4km, 6km and 8km distances on offer while Sunday's development run allows for the 4km, 8km and 14km distances.
"The event is open to the public and members are urged to make an early start towards healthy living," said VAC chairman Krish Naidoo.
Naidoo said the club has two forms of development initiatives on Sundays each month.
These include the 4km, 8km and 14km Ottawa Development run which runs south and the airport run which is northbound and incorporates the 5km, 12km and an extended 15km run/walk in 2016.
This year the club’s 15th anniversary celebrations will provide an interesting array of activities that caters for all ages with time trials, track and field, cross country, development run, airport runs, together with incentives that include the 10x10km challenges as well as the 10x21.1km challenges.
The Gaterite Challenge still proves to be Verulam Athletics club’s anchor event commemorating Human Rights Day in March. A Comrades Marathon qualifier offering 42.2km , 21.1km and 10km, the race has over the past 14 years proven to be a popular event in the KZN race calendar.
VAC has also re-introduced the Gaterite Helpers run a week before the Gaterite race.
The 5km Charity Challenge still proves to be an excellent fund raiser for schools and welfare organisations as in the past 14 years.
In this regard race preparations are underway and members of the public who want to be a part of this famous event, either as a participant or the large group of community volunteers, are free to enquire at Saturday's time trials or Sunday's development runs.
VAC provides opportunities this year to extend its memberships, especially the juniors to participate in the KZN cross country league across the province. For club enquiries call 083 783 6363.
