MONTH-OLD baby who was kidnapped in the Verulam CBD was reunited with her family on March 13.
The mother, Gugu Simelane, told the police that she met a “smooth-talking” woman in town who befriended her and lured her into believing that she would look after her baby while she went to buy cooldrink at a nearby shop.
Verulam police spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten said that when the mother returned, the suspect was nowhere to be found.
“Constables Veran Ramsaroop and Zodwa Makhanya were on duty when they were flagged down by a hysterical mother who informed them that she gave her baby to a woman to hold for her while she went to the shop.
“Upon returning, the suspect had fled with her baby.
The mother said she was informed by a member of the public that there was a woman who was running away with a baby,” Kisten said.
He said that the two officers combed the Verulam CBD and successfully located the suspect (30) and the child.
“She was arrested for child stealing. A case of child stealing was registered and is under investigation. The members were commended for taking that extra mile to find the suspect and the baby.”
The suspect was detained at the Verulam police cells waiting to appear in court.
