Councillors warned

AT a council meeting on Tuesday, the Greater Kokstad Municipality mayor, Bheki Mtolo, warned councillors to stop telling people not to pay municipal rates.

Mtolo said the municipality provides free service to poor people and people must assist the municipality by paying rates.
“Indigent people must also pay municipal rates in order for the municipality to survive.”

In December some Shayamoya households had their electricity disconnected because of their failure to pay rates.

At the council meeting the Auditor- General released an unqualified audit report for the municipality for the 2015 and 2016 financial year.
The Auditor-General told the municipality to collect revenue, fill vacant posts, investigate irregular expenses and monitor action plans to improve the next audit outcomes. The AG also said that the municipality is under investigation by provincial treasury.

Councillors wanted clarity on how long the investigation will take, but the AG said provincial treasury didn’t inform them about the progress of the investigation.
Deputy Mayor Karen Walker said the municipality needs to work hard to receive good audit outcomes.

The council extended the contract of the acting municipal manager, Andile Velem for the next three months or until the post is filled.

Mtolo said recruitment processes of filling the vacant post of municipal manager are under way. The post has been vacant since February 2016 after former manager Zamo Mkhize’s contract was not renewed.
