EMPLOYEES from the Department of Correctional Service (DCS) celebrated their heritage by hosting an event at Shayamoya Eco Park in Kokstad on Wednesday, September 26. Ntombizodwa Sibutha, the Kokstad Management Area acting commissioner said, employees raised money for the event with the aim of promoting cultures and building social cohesion. She said different cultures have been promoted effectively at the event.
“We held competitions for best performing traditional groups. DCS has a responsibility to contribute in communities by conducting events like this one and to promote healthy working environments for employees,” she said.
DCS employees from Bhongweni C-Max Prison, Umzimkhulu Prison, Matatiele Prison, Kokstad Medium Correctional Centre and Port Shepstone Prison attended and showcased cultures like Indian, Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa, and Mpondo.
A homemade traditional beer (umqombothi) was also showcased at the event.
Guest speaker Gabriel Marais, who is the Chairperson of Griqua Traditional Council, spoke about the history of Kokstad.
