ON Wednesday April 18, a Kokstad woman, was withdrawing money from an ATM in Rosewood Square, when an unknown man interfered with the machine while she was waiting for the transaction to process. A short while later, money was deducted from her account.
Mary Tambo said that her bank card and money did not come out from the ATM, and after a few minutes she received a notification message from her bank that R2 000 was withdrawn from her account from another ATM.
When the incident happened, Tambo was with her husband Reverend Zamuxolo Tambo who checked the footage at the Rosewood Square and saw the two men and a woman getting in a car and driving away from the ATM where Mary’s money was supposedly withdrawn from.
SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani
Ncongo confirmed that a case of fraud was opened and said that no arrests have been made yet.
Ncongo said that there were many cases similar to this that are being investigated in Kokstad, adding that it was not easy for police to catch fraudsters because they use different cars.
“It is suspected that these fraudsters are from different towns and they target people from
Kokstad during pay days and weekends. People must be alert when using ATMs at night and on pay days,” Ncongo said.
