GRIQUAS from Durban, Harding, Kokstad and Rietvlei honoured their leader last Saturday by visiting the accident site of Griqua chief, Adam Kok III in Kok's Hill, commonly known as Koki in Umzimkhulu.
The event, organised by the Rietvlei Griquas leader, Jakes Fenner said the purpose of visiting the site was to inform surrounding communities about the importance of the area.
“Initially we had our annual meeting at the church, but we decided to visit the accident site of our chief. It is very important that we preserve our history as Griquas so that future generations know where they come from.
“We also discussed with other Griquas our intention of having the area declared a heritage site,” he said.
Fenner said the Rietvlei Griquas have been working closely with other tribes in the area, especially the Bhaca tribe.
“Chief Mjoli of the Bhaca tribe has been very accommodating and supportive to the cause of the Griquas and we really appreciate him,” he said.
