Illegal-poster count on the rise

ILLEGAL posters advertising “safe abortions”, among others, are plastered everywhere in the Kokstad CBD, which is a major concern to the Kokstad Chamber of Commerce and the community.

Kokstad Chamber of Commerce public relations officer, Margi Fleming said the posters are an eyesore.

“I believe that businesses can deal with illegal posters individually because people who place them don’t stop. I have requested the municipality to deal with these posters and some of them are pasted on buildings in the CBD. A poster that was advertising a music festival in Kokstad was stuck on the historic building of the post office, which is supposed to be protected.”

In April last year, KZN MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo led an awareness campaign about the dangers of illegal abortion posters in Kokstad and removed some from the CBD.

Reportedly the posters are put up at night and it is difficult for people to catch them and inform police or municipality.

SAPS spokesperson Dumisani Ncongo said police don’t remove illegal posters - it is the duty of the municipality to deal with them.
The Greater Kokstad Municipality spokesperson, Sabelo Ncwane said the municipality is against the putting up of illegal posters.

“A service provider is instructed by the municipality to remove illegal posters and owners will face the law.”
