MAYOR ENGAGES MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA
In the past few weeks, the municipality has noted with concern the high level of disheartenment among our communities.
This is as a result of what many view as service-delivery related challenges that are currently being experienced by the municipality.
The mayor therefore saw the need to update the Matatiele community on these and other matters through the local media.
During the media briefing held on Tuesday this week, Mayor Momelezi Mbedla of Matatiele Local Municipality had this to say on electricity: “You will recall that in my inaugural speech in August 2016, I made a commitment to the people of Matatiele that we would take this municipality forward in transforming their lives. I further indicated that this Council would invest its efforts into making Matatiele a better place to live in.
“We have, since 2016, managed to reduce our electricity backlog: in 2015 our electricity backlog was sitting at 45%. I can now proudly say that we are sitting at 34%, while we are working tirelessly to reduce the number even more.”
He further indicated that through electrification projects, about 2 950 households are being connected to the national electrification grid and close to 350 jobs for local people are being created.
These life-changing projects are almost in their final stages in the following areas, Chibini, Pamlaville, Nkali, New-Resh, Thotaneng, Nyaniso, Nkalweni, Bubesi, Mahareng, Madlangala, Mahangwe, Edrayini and Kwa Mbobo.
LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Under Local Economic Development, the municipality has set aside a budget of R350 000 for Grant in Aid funding.
This is the 100% grant fund for co-operatives and SMMEs in Matatiele that lodge their innovative business plans for funding opportunities so as to support the economic growth of Matatiele.
The municipality further considered SMMEs under a programme called SMMEs Development of Co-operatives, where a budget of R550 000 has been set aside. This one talks to the training of local co-operatives and local contractors.
The objective of pursuing this target is to nurture local youth and women by upskilling them to be competitive entrepreneurs and to be attractive to investors.
