IN light of the drought in Kokstad, residents of Long Homes, Bhongweni in Kokstad were appalled at the negligence of the Harry Gwala District Municipality recently.
According to a woman, Bongeka, who lives in the area, personnel from Harry Gwala went to a house in Hlongwane Drive to fix faulty water meter, then left water running from it for hours.
“A van from the municipality went to the house and on Monday fixed something on the meter, but they left water leaking from the meter from about 4pm on Monday and water leaked from it the entire night.
“I don't understand how people from the municipality can leave a meter leaking, especially because we have a water problem in Kokstad. They are the ones who are responsible for providing water, but they let it go to waste,” she said.
When the Fever got to Hlongwane Drive on Tuesday at 9.30am, water was still flowing heavily from the meter, making it 18 hours that water had flowed from it.
A lady at the Harry Gwala offices in Kokstad said the problem was fixed on Tuesday after Cllr Mavuka reported the leak.
This incident comes amid reports that Kokstad is one of the hardest hit towns by drought in the Harry Gwala District and calls from authorities to use water sparingly.
Attempts to get comments from Harry Gwala District Municipality spokesperson, Ndabezitha Tenza, were unsuccessful as his phone went onto voicemail.
