THE community members of Ndawana village outside Umzimkhulu will no longer have to struggle when crossing the Gungununu River. This after the MEC for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, officially opened a new bridge on Tuesday.
Kaunda was joined by Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor Mluleki Ndobe, Umzimkhulu Municipality Mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga, community leaders, and government officials.
According to officials, the construction of the bridge cost approximately R26 million. The bridge connects the villages of Kayeka, Mtantshahlolo, Goso, Elukhasini and Elucingweni.
Community members said the bridge will help them when going to local clinics and schools, saying life was difficult previously.
After opening the bridge, Kaunda named a contractor responsible for the construction of a state-of-the-art public transport facility as part of the ongoing process of public transport transformation.
“The R82-million facilities will provide empowerment opportunities by the awarding of contracts to emerging SMMEs, by making jobs more accessible, and by training local youth. The facility will house all modes of public transport, making it easily accessible to the public,” said Kaunda.
