FOLLOWING elections, ANC members in Kokstad sub-region are divided.
This comes after a story was published in 26 August Fever about a vote of no confidence against regional chairperson Zamo Nxumalo.
The vote of no confidence was tabled by ANC regional executive committee members at a meeting at the Ixopo regional offices.
Some members of Kokstad sub-region, led by secretary Noloyiso Mkhatshwa, released a statement after a meeting at the Kokstad ANC offices on Wednesday that supported the vote of no confidence in Nxumalo, calling for an early regional conference to elect new leadership.
“Wards 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 support the motion, however Wards 1, 9 and 10 didn’t attend the meeting on Wednesday so it is not clear what their stand on the matter is.
“The ANC branches in Kokstad support the call for a vote of no confidence in our Harry Gwala regional chairperson, Nxumalo. We believe it is long overdue and the motion should be followed by a special regional general congress because reshuffling of the executive is not going to assist us, we need fresh blood,” said Mkhatshwa.
Chairperson of the Kokstad sub-region, Phumzile Nocanda, distanced himself from the decision of supporting a vote of no confidence, who is unaware of the meeting that took place at the ANC offices in Kokstad.
“The people who are calling for an early conference do not represent branches of the ANC because all branches are under my control and we haven’t discussed anything related to the regional chairperson. All branches in Kokstad are behind regional chairperson Nxumalo. Some members of the ruling party are politically hungry and want to score personal goals.
“There is a member here in the sub-region that was campaigning to be elected as a mayoral candidate and that member is grieving for not getting that position. Now he is bringing disunity within the sub-region.”
The decline of ANC and losing two wards in Harry Gwala at the elections is also a concern for Mkhatshwa.
“Harry Gwala region is one of the strongest regions in the province known to have a large support base,” said Mkhatshwa.
