PENSIONER Matshidiso Seliane (88) is glad to be alive after her rondavel was set alight allegedly by two known men in Nchodu village in Matatiele last Saturday evening. Her grandchild Mankwabe was present at the time of the fire.

Matshidiso usually slept at home, but that particular night she slept somewhere else.

“On Saturday, two angry men kicked in the doors and windows to my brother’s house and set it alight. They also went to my granny’s rondavel and set it alight,” said Mankwabe.
She said the men assaulted and threatened to stab her when she asked them to stop burning her granny’s rondavel. She said furniture, a fridge were among the burnt items.

Another house in the village was also burnt that night. Community members told Fever that crime is high in the village and women who live alone are the most targeted.
A community member, who wants to remain anonymous for safety reasons, told Fever that pupil drop-outs steal tyres, car batteries, household items, among other things, to sell to buy drugs and alcohol.

“I blame the justice system for being soft on criminals. Thieves are arrested, but are released without getting harsh sentences. When they return to the village they continue with the same crimes,” said the woman.

Police spokesperson Raphael Motloung confirmed the incident and said a case of arson is under police investigation.
“Two suspects aged between 21 and 36 have been arrested and will appear in court soon,” said Motloung.
