Umzimkhulu team wins tourney

AN Umzimkhulu U20 football club, Arsenal FC, made fans proud after winning a trophy and gold medals at a provincial Metro Cup Soccer Tournament in Durban held from September 22 to 25.

This was the first time the team had participated in the tournament.

Coach Gugulethu Jama said eight U20 teams from around KwaZulu-Natal took part.

“We competed against strong teams, but Arsenal FC played well and I am glad with the performance,” said Jama.

He said when the team left for the tournament they was aware they would face strong teams.

“I thank the people of Umzimkhulu and parents of the players who supported the team, which is now preparing to play in local tournaments.”

The U15 team, Fish Hoek FC, came first, and KZN Academy came second. The U20 team, KZN Academy, came second.

Umzimkhulu Local Municipality Mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga said the team has made Umzimkhulu proud and called for the community to support it.

“I would like to call upon stakeholders to assist the team. I thank people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to assist young people to expose their talent,” said Mpabanga.
