“WHAT counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead,” the late former president Nelson Mandela once said.

On Monday (18/07), South Africans will be celebrating Mandela Day. On 18 July 2009, Nelson Mandela Day was launched internationally in recognition of Mandela’s birthday via a unanimous decision by the United Nations General Assembly.

It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela had made a year earlier for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices.

It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.

Many people would go out to help others, while some will be donating food, clothes and many other things. On this day, people undertake activities to change the lives of others.

During his lifetime, Madiba has had some interesting and famous quotes. Here are some of them:

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

“I like friends who have independent minds, because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.”

“Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.”

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, and one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lies defeat and death.”
