“IF ONLY South Africans could be aware that women bring life, maybe their abusers would start treating them much better,’’ said Sisi Ntombela, MEC of Social Development in the Free State.

Ntombela was speaking to Express on Monday (30/11), five days after the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, was launched.

“You kill women, you kill children; you kill children, you kill the nation.

Women and children abuse needs to come to an end,” said Ntombela.

According to her, one of the biggest reasons why abused women do not report this violation, is because they are afraid that the bread-winner of their households will no longer be able to support them financially, should they be arrested.

Ntombela said it is a matter she deals with on a daily basis. She also believes that 16 days for the campaign are not enough and the campaign should run 365 a year.

“Abuse is a vicious cycle. Some children have witnessed their mothers being murdered right before their eyes and this leaves them with lifetime scars.

“We are also discussing this issue in the legislature and I believe these perpetrators should be given life sentences. No bail. No parole,’’ she added.

The 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children is an international awareness-raising campaign. It takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December.

“Abuse in the province is increasing because of drugs. For as long as drugs are dominant in the communities, abuse will continue to be a preceding problem,’’ she highlighted.
