The 2017 Copa Coca-Cola defending champions, the Orion High School, did not leave any stone unturned in their goal to once more proudly lift the winning trophy on Saturday (21/07).
The De Aar based champs successfully defended their Copa Coca-Cola Northern Cape title, effortlessly overcoming all four of their provincial rivals at the AR Abass Stadium.
Orion High, who came into the tournament as favourites to clinch the title, continued where they left off in 2016 during the Northern Cape provincial finals of the 2017 edition of the Copa Coca-Cola u.15 football tournament.
The one-day tournament was hosted by Coca-Cola, in conjunction with the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa) after a dominant display of them winning all four their matches.
The global football development initiative gives millions of young football fans the opportunity to come together and celebrate their passion for football.
The tournament also saw Alwyn Maart aka “The Rock” of the Concordia High School in Namaqualand being identified as the Which Part Will You Play champion who will form part of the All-Star team in the province.
Representing the Northern Cape, the promising goalkeeper and Gr. 10 learner will be playing against an u.15 Premier Soccer League (PSL) club.
Maart, a well-built and confident shot stopper, was chosen after showcasing a promising goal-keeping talent and saving his school that had a weak defence on several occasions.
“This is just so unexpected but I am proud of myself and the progress I am making as young goalkeeper. I am happy that the scouts saw something in me and I believe that this is a good start as I aim to pursue a career in the professional ranks one day and I look forward to being part of the All-Star team at the national finals,” said a stunned Maart.
The 15-year-old not only plays football but is equally talented in rugby and cricket – two other codes in which he represents the school and the province as well.
Now in its third year, the campaign’s Which Part Will You Play initiative sees ambassador Simba Marumo, together with a panel of football experts and media, visited all nine provinces.
They are searching for players that embody and represent the dynamic and unique roles needed to make up a successful team identified as The Rock, the Heart, the Perfectionist, the Rebel, the Joker, the Impossible, the Machine, the Artist, the Underdog, the Mastermind and the Legend.
Players fitting these characteristics are selected to form the Which Part Will You Play All-Star team, and will be given the opportunity to play a curtain raiser match ahead of the official national finals tournament.
