Five members of the notorious Makaota gang in Virginia have been sentenced to life in prison for murder and malicious damage to property.
Tankiso Malgas, Sabata Sentwedi, Tumelo Mahase, Ndabeni Maqhosa and Molahlehi Patrick Mosioa were sentenced in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 12 November.
They had been charged with murder following the killing of an alleged member of the rival Portuguese gang in the Meloding township on 21 October last year.
The charge of malicious damage to property followed an attack on a local police station to which Portuguese members had fled to seek refuge.
The Makaota gang members had attacked the police station and threw stones in an effort to force their rivals from the police premises, said Brig. Motantsi Makhele, provincial police spokesperson.
