The man suspected of raping and killing Palesa Beauty Mabula earlier this month in Qwaqwa is expected to make his third appearance in the Tsheseng Magistrate’s Court today (25/01).
The accused, Paulus Mofokeng (36) of Sedibeng village in Tsheseng, Qwaqwa, is charged with rape and murder. He briefly appeared in court on Monday, 16 January. The state postponed the matter to be heard today while he remains behind bars.
Sgt. Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson for the Phuthaditjhaba police cluster, said post-mortem results revealed the victim (26) was murdered after being raped. He said information received during the preliminary investigation, which included questioning friends of the victim, shows that the deceased had had a love affair with Mofokeng.
According to information received from friends, the deceased had informed them that she was visiting the suspect at the time when she was last seen. The victim was reported missing on 1 January this year.
Mophiring said a young man seeking shelter from rain discovered the woman’s body in an abandoned house in the village and then told people living in the neighbourhood of a chief in the village about the gruesome discovery.
“The victim’s body was found naked in the abandoned house with multiple stab wounds to her head. Her body was in a decomposing state,” said Mophiring. He said through investigation, the police also tried to establish the motive for the murder.
Mophiring said preliminary findings revealed that the victim had had a reputation of having a string of love affairs with different men and leaving her home without reporting her whereabouts.
The victim originally came from the Tweeling township of Mafahlaneng.
