The National Museum in Bloemfontein will mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities by hosting awareness activities from 22 November to 3 December.
The themes at the launch on 22 November are “Day of Awareness”, “Sensitivity Training” and “Motivation”.
On 3 December, it will focus on free access for persons with disabilities, including their guides.
Learners from three Bloemfontein schools will perform and showcase their talents in art exhibitions.
Dr Nico Avenant, head of the Department of Mammalogy at the National Museum, says speakers from organisations in the disability sector, including the university, will deliver presentations.
Avenant says feedback is that the National Museum’s initiative to make exhibitions more accessible is valued and has led to a dramatic increase in visitor numbers.
This has increased awareness and sensitivity about the special needs of persons challenged physically and otherwise.
