One of the would-be robbers arrested during a foiled armed robbery at the Botshabelo Traffic Department remains behind bars, while the police continue searching for others.
Sechaba Paul Mokhothu appeared in the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (01/02) on a charge of attempted business robbery. He was arrested on Tuesday, 30 January.
Sgt Martin Xuma, Botshabelo police spokesperson, said the other suspects had fled after a shoot-out with the police.
“The suspects arrived at the traffic department office at about 02:00 and held the security officers on duty hostage. The police were informed about the robbery,” said Xuma.
He stated that when the police approached the premises, the robbers had started shooting at the Selosesha Tactical Response Team and Selosesha Crime Intelligence Unit members.
“The members retaliated with fire and the suspects fled, but one was arrested. No member was injured during the shootout.”
Xuma said the police had confiscated explosives, a jackhammer and a grinder that had been found in Mokhothu’s possession.
