A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held on Wednesday (24/08) for the 11 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who died in a tragic bus accident on Friday (19/08).
The victims were of the 42 members who attended a Women’s Day event in Qwaqwa.
They were killed when the bus they were travelling in overturned near the Basotho Cultural Village in the Golden Gate Nature Reserve.
Nine people were pronounced dead on the scene and two died later.
One of the victims was airlifted to the Pelonomi Regional Hospital in Bloemfontein, while others were admitted to the Manapo Regional Hospital in Qwaqwa. Several others sustained severe injuries.
Pres. Jacob Zuma has extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) said the death of the victims has put a damper on Women’s Month.
“We are saddened by the tragic loss of the lives of our warriors, protectors of our freedom, democracy and sovereignity. We wish to convey our condolences to their families, friends and colleagues,” said Jabu Mahlangu, Sanco’s national spokesperson.
Those who died are:
- Phumza Teledimo, chaplain (37);
- Lesego Cynthia Rasethuntsha (25);
- Cpl Akhona Tshoni (30);
- L/Cpl Sharon Nosiphiwe Macala (27);
- Maria Jacobs (57);
- Alice Thakanyane Masilo (27);
- L/Cpl Cheena Roberta Jonkers (30);
- Sgt Matseko Josephine Madimabe (26);
- L/Cpl Maditsietsi Constance Morotolo (26);
- Portia Palesa Ramabodu (26); and
- Maserame Dorcas Molibeli (25).
The memorial service will be held at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) in Vereeniging Drive, Bloemfontein, at 10:00.
