The unbeaten records of the Super Eagles and the Central University of Technology (CUT) in the Free State’s ABC Motsepe League are on the line as they are gearing up for pulsating league fixtures.
The matches are scheduled for this weekend, Friday (25/10) and Saturday (26/10) in Bloemfontein and Botshabelo.
The first match is a local derby between rivals Bloemfontein Young Tigers and CUT on Friday in Bloemfontein.
The other fixture is between De General FC and Eagles on Saturday in the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo.
The two undefeated clubs have each won three matches, and drew two and one, respectively.
Bethlehem-based Eagles have one outstanding league fixture due to engagement in the 2019 Nedbank Cup: a match against Harmony. The South African Football Association (Safa) has re-scheduled this outstanding match to be played on 30 October in Bethlehem.
CUT is third on the log table with 11 points, while Eagles are in fifth place.
With victory, CUT will dethrone Tigers (12 points) from the top spot or claim the second spot pending the outcome of a fixture between Mangaung Unite and African Warriors.
Giant-killers De General, currently in fourth position, will take a giant leap to second position or to the top of the table with a victory over high-flying Eagles, and the same would happen for the Bethlehem-based side if they win.
De General and Eagles are tied on the log table with ten points.
De General sent a strong warning signal to Eagles when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic by 2 – 1 in another derby fixture played in Bloemfontein on Saturday (19/10). This followed a 4 – 1 win over Kovsie in a derby played a week ago.
The De General’s other win in a derby was by 1 – 0 against Mangaung, followed by a 1 – 1 draw with CUT in a derby also played a week ago.
CUT’s derby against current log-leaders Tigers is expected to produce fireworks. Both teams hope to have all their key players available for this intriguing derby.
CUT will especially depend on goalkeeper Reatile Mafa, one of the regular goal-menders in fine form for the pulsating outing against Tigers.
The diminutive keeper has helped CUT win four of the five league matches played thus far and his team has conceded four goals since the start of the 2019’20 season.
The outing is scheduled to take place on Friday at the CUT sports complex in Bloemfontein. Kick-off is at 17:00.
