PARENTS all over KZN have been frantic as they are being told their children will not be granted admission to schools if they are not able to pay registration fees.

The Department of Basic Education, on Thursday, dispelled this notion, urging parents to report schools that demand registration fees in order to secure a space for their child. According to the department it is illegal for schools to demand any sort of registration or admission fee as a prerequisite for the enrolment of a child.

With schools opening on Monday, department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said they had been inundated with calls from parents whose children could not be registered because they were not able to afford a payment upfront.
