FRIDAY, October 19 was the date of the launch of the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union at Umvoti Municipality.

Known as Imatu, it promotes service to its members on all aspects of labour practice in the workplace and offers members protection against possible unfair labour

practices.

Eighty Umvoti Municipality workers have signed up as members of Imatu.

The national president, Stanley Khoza, said the union was totally independent of any political party and urged that workers also distance themselves from politics in the workplace.

He stressed the importance of doing an honest day’s work, which was supported by the enthusiastic audience of Umvoti Municipal workers.

Mr Khoza also pointed out that in terms of the South African Constitution individuals had the right to join a trade union of their choice.

A spokesman for the newly formed Umvoti Imatu said members had undertaken to serve the people of Umvoti honestly in all ways.
