THIS year’s JG Zuma Marathon is a down run, starting at Seven Oaks, and finishing at Albert Falls Dam on Sunday, April 29.
This standard 42,2-km marathon is a qualifier for one of the world’s most respected ultra-races — the Comrades Marathon, which takes place in June.
This is the fourth year this important marathon is being run with entries increasing each year.
Starting time is 6 am from Seven Oaks garage for the race, 6.30 am for the 21-km run and 6.45 am for the 10 km and there is also a five-kilometre run. Cut-off time at Albert Falls dam is 11.30 am.
Entries are on this website: https://jgzuma2018.myactive.co.za — online entries close on April 20.
“Most road runners are now starting to realise that in their build up the JG Marathon comes at the right time of their preparations for the big ultra,” said Vincent Zuma, chairperson of the JG Zuma Marathon.
“Around this time weather conditions are perfect for running, making the JG Zuma Marathon well-positioned and we encourage athletes to avoid the last- minute rush and register now.”
Zuma continued: “We are urging runners to come down and enjoy the beautiful and inviting undulating scenic route of KwaZulu-Natal.
“We have set out the day to accommodate the whole family in a fun-filled atmosphere, while allowing serious runners as well.”
Winners of the me’'s and women’s races will each receive R50 000.
Former president Jacob Zuma will be at the prize-giving at Albert Falls, together with the MEC for Sports and Recreation, and mayors at 12 pm and will present the prizes to individuals and teams.
All finishers will receive a bronze medal, cap or t-shirt and the top 10 in all age categories will receive a gold medal, cap and t-shirt.
Shuttles will transport runners from Albert Falls at 3.45 am and 4.30 am to the start at Seven Oaks.
