A POLICEMAN, sleeping in the barracks close to Pep Stores in Kranskop, was awakened round about 2 am on Easter Saturday by a light shining from the store. He went out to investigate and saw a man standing outside the store — he was arrested.
Lights were on in the building and the policeman could hear noise and activity in and on the roof.
With back up of two colleagues the three went into the store — gang members had attempted to open the safe with a blowtorch but had not been successful. They had run off as the police arrived and reportedly drove off in a vehicle with NU registration.
The police estimate there were at least six members in the gang.
Shortly after the police checked the Kranskop taxi rank, they found a member of the gang there and recovered cellphones, airtime and other stolen items. He was arrested and the two appeared in Kranskop Magistrate’s Court last week —the case was remanded and the two remain in custody.
Last week members of POP from Pietermaritzburg and Durban undertook a raid in the Kranskop area, acting on information received on illegal firearms . Two AK 47 rifles; two pistols and two revolvers were recovered and arrests made for the illegal possession of firearms.
