CHRISTIANO Ronaldo was born on a small island off the western coast of Portugal. He grew up in a largely working class neighbourhood and his early life was shaped by hardship.

His mother worked as a cook and cleaner while his father was a gardener.

Ronaldo was introduced to soccer through his father's work as the equipment manager at a boy's club. By the time Ronaldo was 10, he was recognised as, “a kid who ate, slept and drank soccer”.

We have our own Cristiano Ronaldo at Wembley College - Tino Manureyke. Tino grew up in Zimbabwe in a small town called Masvingo close to Harare.

When Tino was in Grade 5 at Kyle School he began playing soccer for the Grade 7 team.

His parents moved to Namibia where his soccer career was put on hold.

When his family moved to South Africa, he started boarding at Wembley College where his soccer playing continued.

I discussed with Tino why he enjoyed soccer.

“I enjoy trying to help my team win and I like learning new foot skills to help me handle the ball better."

Tino has recently been to a number of midland soccer trials. During each set of trials he has managed to survive and make it through to the next round. The last tournament determined if he would make it into the KZN team.

Tino made his parents, family and school proud by being chosen for the KZN A soccer team He will play in a provincial tournament at the end of September.

Tino summed up his experience in one word, “Striving.”

His motto is “whatever you start, you need to finish.”

The people who have inspired Tino are his parents and his favourite soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

He is grateful to Mr Hutch and Mr Ngubani for their support at Wembley.
