THE three KwaZulu-Natal Education Department top officials who had been placed on suspension following a damning investigation report on the controversial sanitary towels procurement project have been cleared.

In 2016 the department, which initially had set aside R20 million for the procurement of the sanitary towels, ended up spending close to R110 million for the items, which most of the pupils did not need.

The three officials, who occupy the positions of deputy director-general, chief director and director, had, amongst other things, been accused of failing to prevent the department from incurring wasteful expenditure by procuring far more than what was required.
